What's in the bank

The Series 79 is 75 scored questions in 2.5 hours, and FINRA weights it across three functions. The bank follows that structure:

  • Collection, analysis and evaluation of data: financial statements, financial modeling, valuation (DCF, comparable companies, precedent transactions) and due diligence
  • Underwriting and new financings: the registration process, types of debt and equity offerings, syndicate mechanics and the regulatory framework
  • Mergers, acquisitions, tender offers and restructuring: deal structures, fairness opinions, tender offer rules and reorganization mechanics

The exam tests rules as much as finance, and the solutions cover both. Valuation and accretion/dilution questions go through the arithmetic step by step. Offering-process and M&A rules questions explain why the right choice is right and what each wrong choice gets wrong. Each function has its own practice page, and the free diagnostic quiz gives you a readiness baseline in a few minutes.

Where to start

  1. Take the diagnostic to find your weakest function area.
  2. Drill the analytical core first (modeling and valuation), then the offering and M&A rules.
  3. Switch to mixed practice once your accuracy by topic levels off, since the real exam mixes topics together.
  4. Keep an eye on the readiness score, which weights recent performance by topic and tracks you against the pass threshold.
