Strategic planning

Free IMA CMA Part 1 (Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics) lesson in Planning, Budgeting, and Forecasting. 14 min read, ~2,041 words.

A CEO claims her three-year plan is "strategic" because it covers more than one fiscal year. The exam tests whether you can separate a true strategic plan (mission, environment scan, generic strategy) from a long-dated operating budget dressed up with vision language.

The mission states the organization's current purpose: what it does, for whom, and what makes it distinct. The vision states the aspirational future state. Strategic planning is the structured process that selects the path from mission to vision while honoring long-term goals. Goals are broad outcomes (grow regional share, diversify revenue). Strategies are the chosen paths to reach them.

KEY: Mission answers "why we exist now." Vision answers "what we want to become." Strategy answers "how we get from one to the other."

A strategic plan typically spans 3 to 5 years. Capital-heavy industries (utilities, mining, pharma) push to 10 or more years because asset payback demands it. Fast-moving sectors (consumer tech, fashion) compress to 2 to 3 years because the environment outruns longer horizons.

Bottom line

Exam shortcut

When a question hands you a statement and asks "mission or vision," look for tense. Present-tense purpose is mission; future-state aspiration is vision. Plans, goals, and strategies sit between the two. When a SWOT item is given, sort by controllable vs not. Anything the firm controls (assets, skills, processes, culture) is S or W. Anything outside (regulation, rivals, technology, demographics) is O or T. This eliminates two answer choices instantly.
